About ChangeMakers

May 7, 2008

In recent years the centre of Manchester has been developed into a world class city. This has raised its civic profile, attracted investment, and given many Mancunians something to be proud of.  But in many other areas of the city, large numbers of people are living in poverty and do not feel included in these positive changes.

Over the last few months, Church Action on Poverty, in partnership with the Faith Network for Manchester and the Refugee & Migrant Forum Manchester, have organised a series of meetings to explore the possibility of building a people’s organisation in Manchester. Over 80 community and faith organisations are now considering how they might join together to bring about change.

Together we can build a People’s Organisation which will…

  • Be large, diverse and run by local people
  • Train local people for participation in public life
  • Create new channels of participation in decision-making which are owned and controlled by Manchester residents
  • Hold listening campaigns to hear the concerns of its members
  • Conduct professional, independent research about local issues
  • Build relationships directly with power-holders to bring about change

I am interested in attending the next Changemakers meeting on 17 July. Presently I’m exploring working as a volunteer with Boaztrust.
